This project to
investigate the heritage of RAF Hornchurch has been helped
by many different organisations from English Heritage to local
groups such as the RAF Hornchurch Association. A list of links
to websites of some of these organisations and other relevant
groups is included to the left.
Although the project has been commissioned by London Borough
of Havering it has been entirely funded by a grant from the
Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (administered for DEFFRA
by English Heritage and other bodies such as Natural England).
The ALSF was established in April 2002 in order to help offset
the environmental effects of aggregates extraction, particularly
in aggregates-producing areas. Hornchurch Country Park is
an ideal candidate for an ALSF grant due to the large scale
aggregates extraction undertaken in the area since the 1960s.
Most of the historic photographs included on this website
and used in the research for the project have been provided
by Richard Smith from the Purfleet Heritage Centre. Further
research has been undertaken at various places including:
the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, the RAF Museum London and
the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
